According to BBC News, Brazil needs more skilled workers and more competitive industries
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is making her first official visit to the US for a range of talks including trade, education and foreign policy.
But the overall focus of her trip is boosting ties between the two biggest nations in the Americas – and Brazil’s international standing.
Brazil, the world’s sixth biggest economy, is only the eighth biggest trading partner of the US.
President Rousseff is due to meet President Barack Obama at the White House later on Monday.
Their talks are set to focus on “fostering trade and economic ties, and in education and innovation between the two nations”, the White House said according to BBC News.
Ms Rousseff will also address business leaders at the US Chamber of Commerce.
Brazil at Salisbury International Arts Festival
25 May 2012 – 9 June 2012
Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival returns in 2012 with a programme focuses especially on Brazil, through film, dance, music, visual arts and textiles, including several UK and European premieres.
According to the organizers, on 26 and 27 May, they kick start the Brazil celebrations with a weekend of music, dance, textiles and film inspired by pioneering work in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Favela to Salisbury is the culmination of a three-year project between the Festival and AfroReggae.
At Danebury Hillfort, Family Fun Day will lead into a Samba Spectacular featuring AfroReggae’s star drummers and dancers together 200 children and young. They will also be offering the chance of a drumming workshop with AfroReggae, so be sure to get with the beat and enjoy this high energy workshop.
The weekend ends with two UK film Premières of 5X Favela and 5X UPP, which tell the true story about the favelas of Brazil. The Festival hosts a Cristal de Luz installation, which reflects the fashion, dexterity and skill for which the sewing cooperative, COOPA-ROCA, from the Rocinha favela, is celebrated. Its founder, Maria Teresa Leal, appears in conversation with members of AfroReggae.
Original Brazilian music includes:
The Brasil Guitar Duo performing classical guitar with traditional Brazilian sounds such as choro e samba, maxine and bale.
Brazilian Theory bring together Scottish and Brazilian musicians, capturing a hugely uplifting raw energy and spark between the musicians.
Don’t miss the infectious sounds of Rio’s red hot band Do Amor who play at this year’s Party in the Close. The band combines colourful Brazilian music with modern indie and afro-pop sounds.
Self-published female songstress Tulipa Ruiz will perform songs that sound like favourites, from the first time that you hear them. A little samba, a little bossa, her concerts are praised for delicious sounds.
Also according to the organizers, brilliant Brazilian pianist and composer Benjamim Taubkin and leading Brazilian dancer Morena Nascimento, from Pina Bausch’s extraordinary dance company, create a feast for the eyes and ears, as they produce an unforgettable dialogue between dance, music, piano and bodies, performing the European Première of their show Birth. Birth is the fruit of a powerful collaboration and will be a truly wonderful evening for all.
Free for all to see, the Festival will be bringing several Brazilian Exhibitions to Salisbury.
Ana Maria Pacheco’s extraordinary sculpture The Longest Journey will be placed in the North Transept of Salisbury Cathedral, a truly magnificent piece of art.
In contrast, Alexandre Tadeu Alves, or Chivitz (his street name) has been known for nearly 10 years on the streets of Paulo for his characters. His paintings feature abstracted figural shapes and expressive hand gestures. His influences include pop art, animation, graffiti and tattoo, which will be reflected in work of the exhibition, courtesy of the leading São Paulo gallery Choque Cultural and at a currently unloved outdoor location, to be revealed.
Brazil National Exhibition PQ’11 will be placed in the Salisbury City Library. The exhibition is making its UK premiere and aims to explore and present contemporary scenography, including stage, costume, lighting, sound and other elements of performance design. The installation will show the interaction of theatrical scenography, visual arts and popular culture traditional and modern, urban and everyday.
For the film programme this year, the organizers have chosen some of the best new films from Brazil, including several UK Premières, with many of the films being accompanied by question and answers with the film makers.
UK Premières include 5X Favela and 5X UPP, telling the true story about the Rio’s favelas; Historias que so existem quando lembradas, a poetic, beautifully composed portrait of a seldom seen world; Prime Time Soap, filmed in a Brazilian telenovela style, this combines comedy and melodrama offering an escape from the reality of the dictatorship ruling Brazil in 1978, amongst a selection of other films including Rio, about two brightly coloured birds embarking on an adventure to Rio, a perfect film for all the family.
With Brazilian film and music, to art and dance, there will be an opportunity for everyone to experience this wonderful and exciting culture.
